Council’s energy projects use sustainability levy funding to reduce energy use, install renewable energy systems and run programs that encourage awareness around energy use. Multiple solar panels have been installed across a number of Council assets to reduce the overall carbon footprint for Lane Cove. This includes: • A 10kw Solar Photovoltaic System at the new Blackman Park Scout and Amenities Hall. This system is set up with battery storage to ensure the building can get optimum usage from the solar after hours • A 10kw system at Possums Corner Child Care Centre • A 10.25kw system at the Council Depot. A lighting upgrade at Market Square Car Park was also undertaken. This is Council’s fourth largest energy consuming site. A review of the lighting in this car park showed that the lights had reached their end of life, which provided the opportunity to upgrade to more energy efficient fittings. 380 light fittings were replaced and will result in significant energy and cost savings as well as reduced maintenance, improved light quality and colour which have improved the safety and overall look and feel of the facility. Sustainability Levy funding enables Lane Cove to actively monitor and manage water catchments to ensure the health of our local waterways, improve stormwater management and contribute to regional studies. Water saving initiatives were undertaken at Blackman Park including an installed 35,000L rainwater tank, a smart toilet system and low flow shower heads. A new creek line and artificial wetland was also created to provide natural filtration and a native fauna ecosystem. Council engaged a consultant to monitor the health of our creeks and waterways. Water and macro invertebrate samples are taken at four creek sites and tests conducted for levels of bacteria, heavy metals and nutrients. Data shows that the health of our creeks has remained consistent over the past few years. WATER Blackman Park signage. Market Square car park lighting upgrade. Original Lighting Upgraded Lighting
